This is an open blog. I use it to express my thoughts and my opinions. But they are just opinions. Anyone who questions those is free to comment, or refute anything I write. I enjoy a good debate. If you can convince me that I am wrong, I’m not too much of an egoist to admit that I was wrong. So feel free to comment on anything I blog, just keep it clean.
I was born into a southern Democrat family. In those days every politician in the south was a Democrat. There was never any competition. One of my earliest memories is of me sitting on my dad’s shoulders in a crowd of hundreds, in the rain, in a railroad yard. Franklin Roosevelt was leaning on the railing of the rear train car and using a megaphone, and he was campaigning. The Democrats of that era thought that Roosevelt was God. They were not like the Democrats of today. Oddly, when I was old enough to vote the first time, I voted for Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican. I didn’t vote for Ike because he was a Republican, I did it because he had won World War Two for us. Since that time, I have voted for whomever I thought was the best person for the country, regardless of their political party. Personally, I think that if you don’t vote, then you have no right to complain if the government is not to your liking.
Which brings me to this point: I keep hearing Carl Rove and other pundits say that Donald Trump is not a “conservative.” So my question then is this? Is Mitch McConnell or Paul Ryan a conservative? If so, then I’m not one either because I believe that they are responsible for our problems by acquiescing to every demand Barack Obama has made of congress. Is Mitt Romney a conservative? I know that my views are not those of Romney, although I voted for him as opposed to the other choice of Barack Obama. However, five million registered Republicans didn’t vote for Romney, and I had to hold my nose to do it myself.
So what then is Donald Trump? I don’t know, and I don’t care. What I do know is that whatever he is, he has the Mitch McConnells and the Mitt Romneys sweating blood and that is fine with me. They deserve it. I really don’t care what “label” he is – I do know that he is not like McConnell and Romney and Ryan and that is why the majority of Americans have given him almost every primary. Rush Limbaugh says that Americans are voting for Trump because they want someone who will “go get ‘em and fight back.” I think he is right. Most Americans have been beaten down and trodden upon by our own government. The liberals who control congress and the media call us names if we object to illegal’s invading our country, redefining marriage, and third trimester abortions. We don’t like being told we must not offend Muslims who want to kill us. We are pissed, and we want revenge. We don’t like taking God out of the schools and the courthouse.
How about Ted Cruz? Is he a “conservative?” As Trump says, “He made a speech.” It didn’t accomplish anything, but Cruz won’t let us forget it. He preaches to us like we are imbeciles and he is the only smart one in the room. I don’t like for people to talk down to me, do you? I heard a taxi driver say it best. He said of Donald Trump, “He talks like the rest of us.” And that is Trump’s secret of popularity across all levels of society. He says what we would say and he doesn’t care if he is called a bigot or a racist or homophobe. He talks like the rest of us. And if that makes him something other than what current Republicans call a “conservative” that’s okay with me.
