Cable Guy!

I found out something this week that Is really disturbing. It started as a “normal” calamity – our cable system was out one morning. Since the TV and phones are also on the cable, we were essentially cut off from the world (which isn’t a bad idea, unless you have a schedule to meet).

My wife, on her way home, saw some Comcast trucks and knowing our cable was out, she stopped to asked them what the problem was. The technician showed her an equipment box that had been pried open and the contents removed. These “boxes” are technically repeaters – that is, they amplify the cable signal so that it doesn’t get weaker as the cable progresses down the line.

Now, there is no “copper” to speak of in these boxes, they primarily contain circuit boards. So why would anyone break into one and steal the contents? The Comcast tech told my wife that it was “kids” doing this dirty work and that it was going on all over the metro Atlanta area. That particular day so many boxes had been rifled that the whole Stone Mountain area was without cable service. I find it so distressing to think that youngsters would be breaking and stealing to this extent, that I have to find some other reason. Perhaps someone is stealing these circuit boards and selling them overseas where they might be of some value. We know that copper thieves are all over, but as I said, there is very little copper in these repeater boxes.

Whatever the cause, it shows a moral decline in some element of our population that they can steal with no regret and a clear conscience. And that is the sad part. America is not the “Ozzie & Harriet” land that I grew up in. And we are worse off for it.
