Well, the big “Tropical Knights” give-away is over and about 4,000 folks took advantage of getting it free. I hope they enjoy it. Also, with the end of that promotion the price dropped to $2.99 for any future buyers where it will stay. While I was working on this promotion I did some interesting research into Amazon book buyers. The promo pushed “Tropical Knights” into the Top 500 books, briefly, so that made me curious as to what kind of books made up the Top 100 on Amazon.
It’s bad news for us, dear good fiction writers. The top 100 sellers on Amazon are books about: zombies, werewolves, vampires, the “living dead,” steamy sex, and romance novels.(Maybe steamy sex and romance novels is redundant). Sorry, my friend. No memoirs, no biographies, no true crime, not even any non-true crime. Nope. All the big sellers are trash.
Now, I don’t know about you but it is impossible for me to write in any of the above genres. So we will never make the Top 100. In a way it is sad, that there is no big market for good fiction but it is indicative of the educational system in America, and perhaps around the world. The current generation has grown up with a seventh-grade reading level so they cannot be expected to read anything that might have some real substance to it.
And that is okay. You keep writing your quality work. You would be prostituting yourself if you even tried to drop down to the level of the books I have mentioned above. Even if you could write in that manner, all you would get in return is money. If all we worked for was money, we would get a real job. And money has never been my motivation or yours, has it?
