This month marks two years that I have been writing this blog, with some regularity, I might add. I know that there are not a lot of readers of my musings. And that is fine. To be honest, writing this (almost daily) piece is sort of like keeping my journal. When I write of “writing” I am really reminding myself of the rules of fiction that I learned long ago but sometimes have to put them out there where I can read them to keep me on track.
Someone once said that the easiest thing for authors to do is to “not” write. And that is quite true. Writing, and re-writing and then doing it again and again is hard work. So it is quite easy to find some more pleasurable thing to do. But, a writer must write and that is all there is to it.And the habit of writing something each day, is a good one for a writer to learn early on and to continue. Even if the writing is only a blog that few will read.
Today (3 June) is my birthday and I spent it in reverie, actually. Oh, I bought myself a new computer (but only so I can write more easily) but the rest of the day I lounged around listening to old jazz on the radio and in a nonjudgmental way contemplated my past life. It does one good to do that occasionally. We tend to get focused on the immediate problem (like my old computer crashing all the time) and we lose sight of what, for want of a better phrase, I will call “The Big Picture.” Life is complex and it is filled with complex people. Some of them I have loved, and some I have hated. And some have had no effect on me at all. But in spite of its warts I wouldn’t trade my life for anyone else’s and how many of you can say that? So Happy Birthday to me, and I hope I have a few more. So many stories to tell – and so little time!
