What’s the Catch, Beckman?

The Christmas sales on TV are something to see. I think they are the epitome of hustling the crowd. There is a local mens’ store that wins the prize. I have mentioned before that they often advertise, “Buy one suit for $150 and get TWO FREE!” I hate to state the obvious over and over again, but friends – there is nothing FREE. What you are buying is three $50 suits. This Christmas they have outdone their previous efforts. Their latest: “Buy anything at 70% OFF, and add 20% OFF!” Wow! What a deal. Why, if they would just add another 10% off, your purchase would cost you nothing! Well, again the bad news. No business could stay viable with “savings” such as that. So what they have done is take their $100 suit (on which they make a profit) and marked it UP to $190 so they can mark it DOWN to $100. It reminds me of a fellow who use to come into the TV station where I worked to do his own commercials for his automobile dealership.

His tagline was always, “We lose money on every deal, but we just want to make friends.” Once I asked him if he lost money on every sale, how did he stay in business? With a straight face he said, “Volume, son. We do it by volume.”

So I am offering one of my Adventure/Thriller novels (Tropical Knights) FREE for download from Amazon from 26 December to 30 December for you lucky folks who get a Kindle or iPad from Santa. If nothing is FREE, then what am I doing? In other words, what’s the catch, Beckman, you swindler, you! There is always a motive behind sales, my friend. And mine is simple. It is a promotion. IF you download my FREE book and read it and like it – perhaps you will then buy another book or story of mine. If you really like it you may recommend it to your friends. Also, by offering a free book (which will be advertised on Bookbub on Saturday 28 December, an advertisement I paid for) it should be downloaded by hundreds of people. That increases the “exposure” of my work and hopefully a lot of word-of-mouth promotion will be the result. If you are a downloader, I hope you enjoy Tropical Knights enough to try another. If that’s not good enough for you, I can always offer the same book for sale at “100% off the original Price!” Get ‘em while they are hot, folks – and Merry Christmas.
