I try to keep these blogs generally devoted to writing. That is to say, I keep them apolitical. But the events of the last few years compel me to try to explain something to you that you may not know. Or that you may have been led to believe is true when it really isn’t
Our Congress is at the lowest polling level in history. Many of us are concerned about our health insurance, social security, or at the most basic level just finding a job. Ninety million people who want to work, can’t find employment. You may wonder why our congressmen are not doing something, anything, to ease our minds or solve our problems.
So let me explain politics to you, both at the national and at the local level. I will use an analogy. Have you ever been in any court related situation? If so, you will see two or more lawyers raving, shouting, and calling each other the most deplorable names imaginable. I mean these guys really HATE each other, don’t they? However, if you see those same lawyers out of court you’ll often find that they are members of the same Country Club, that they play golf together, drink together, have picnics together, are God fathers to each others’ children. You see, the courtroom action you view. while it appears real to you the outsider, is all play acting for a jury of people who are too dumb to keep themselves from being called for jury duty.
Politics is exactly the same. I don’t care if you call yourself a Democrat, Republican, Tea Partier, or Independent. ALL politicians, with possibly one or two exceptions, (that would be YOUR favorite congressman) are just like those lawyers in court.
It might have been George Will who drew the parallel. If you watched Professional Wresting for the first time, you would think those wrestlers despised each other so much they might tear each others’ arms off. Later you learn that no matter how fierce they appear in the ring, they are really friends, are in business together, and they have their “act” well scripted and rehearsed so that they don’t accidentally hurt each other.
Republicans and Democrats are just like that We really don’t have two separate parties, they are all members of the same party. As the late George Wallace once stated, “There’s not a dime’s worth of difference between them.” George may have been a bigot, but he was a smart man. You hear both parties declaring their hatred of each other. How despicable the other party is. How ruinous those rotten (fill in the name) congressmen are. But when the day is done, when the TV cameras are off, those same congressmen are members of the same Country Club, play golf together, have drinks together, share jokes, send each other birthday cards and Christmas presents.
The MOST important thing to a politician is not your welfare, but his. And they must put on the “Big Show” so you will vote for them because it is their career. They love the power and the perks and the lifetime retirement plan. There’s no business like show business, and politicians would be shoo-ins for the Academy Award for best acting. I hate to be the one to tell you—but politics really is Professional Wrestling.
