The Rich get Richer!

First, my thanks to the five people who read this blog. No, you are not obligated to do it EVERY DAY. I’m not keeping a log of your attendance, so relax. But, I do think that most of you are writers or if not, certainly readers. So I like to keep these rants generally on a theme of writing and the mechanics of writing and publishing.

We know that Jeff Bezos who owns Amazon bought the Washington Post newspaper, not with Amazon money, but with his own. And we know he is a billionaire. Not surprising. Amazon, which started out peddling books by mail, now sells everything. (I’m not sure if they sell automobiles or airplanes – yet.) But I’m not interested in how Mr. Bezos makes his money selling hardware. I am aware of how he makes it publishing eBooks.

Here’s the thing. Before I started writing today’s blog I checked my Amazon “royalties” for the last six weeks. A huge sum. Almost $29.00. Yes, twenty-nine dollars. And that is embarrassing but it is not the worst part. I haven’t received that $29.00 yet and won’t for a long time..

You see, Amazon HOLDS an author’s royalties until they reach $100.00 BEFORE they send you a check. Well, that sounds reasonable, doesn’t it. I mean, a big company like Amazon – gosh, if they sent authors their royalty every time a book was sold that would be a bookkeeping nightmare, wouldn’t it?

But, pause a moment and think of this. (I feel like I need “bullet points” for this presentation.) Consider that Amazon has over 100 MILLION titles in their eBook library. Many –no, I’m going way far out on a limb here and say – MOST of those titles sell maybe one or two books.

Now, Mr. Bezos HOLDS all of that money until each author reaches $100.00 in sales, BEFORE he pays OUT any money. And consider, many of those authors will NEVER sell $100.00 worth of books. Even if Mr. Bezos only gets 1% interest on that money he is holding………..my God! Is it any wonder that Amazon will publish ANYTHING?

A hundred million titles times 1% interest. Yo, homie, I’m totally talking high finance here, bro. You see what I’m sayin’? Fanfuckingtastic! Now, are there any questions about why Mr. Bezos is a billionaire and can buy a newspaper with his OWN money? No? I didn’t think so. I now release you to go read an interesting blog.
