There is a local clothing store that runs a commercial that always amuses me. It goes something like this: “Buy one of our quality suits for $300 and receives TWO more suits of equal quality ABSOLUTELY FREE!”
I’m going to reveal the secret folks and I hate to break your heart. If you take up this wonderful offer you will receive three $100 suits. You see, it is just as true now as it has ever been—NOTHING is free.
The same tactic is a standby of automobile sales. Let’s say there is a car the dealer can make a profit on selling it for $20,000. So he prices it at $22,500 and tells you “Get our great $2,500 REBATE! And you feel so good because you got the car you wanted and SAVED $2,500. This kind of commerce is so common I think buyers actually believe they are getting a really great bargain. You can tell you neighbor, with a big smile, “I saved $2,500!”
I think these examples are proof that America has lost the game and this great experiment in Democracy that started 240 years ago is over. A majority of Americans now believe that they can get what they want FREE. But, if you are not a low information person you know that if someone gets something at no cost, SOMEBODY else has paid for that.
With this attitude prevailing we now have 47% of Americans receiving food stamps and “free” housing and “free” medical attention at Emergency Rooms and “free” cell phones. If you were working and lost your job the government will now give you A YEAR AND A HALF of “unemployment insurance” (which is paid for by you and I paying taxes). For low skilled workers it has now become more profitable NOT to work—so why bother?
America is lost. Write this down. Hillary Clinton will win the 2016 election because she will promise “free everything” as the current administration does and America will continue its dive into socialism until we reach the depth of despair that Europe is now experiencing.
Remember the old story—there are two candidates running for president of the seventh grade. Billy’s campaign calls for less homework, longer time to finish tests, tutoring for those who need it, use of computers in study hall, open discussion of common problems.
Sally’s campaign is simple. “If I am elected, free ice cream for everybody.”
Sally wins in a landslide of votes. There was no explanation of who was going to pay for the ice cream, but the voters didn’t care. They just wanted “FREE” ice cream!
A political candidate who runs on a platform of building the economy (who cares about ‘the economy’ if I get everything free?), creating jobs (who needs a job if I get everything free?) for ethics in government (who cares about ethics? Everybody’s doing it!) hasn’t a prayer of winning an election. Most Americans now vote for the candidate who promises to give them lots of “free” stuff. And since there are now more of them than there are of us, America is doomed. For the first time I am now glad to be an old man. I don’t want to be here to see the final gasps of a once proud and noble country.
