On Being a Real Writer

On a different note this time: My mom once told me that “God doesn’t close a door, without opening another.” I don’t know if it is God or just modern conditions but I do know that we have a conundrum working on us as writers. On the one hand, it is technically much easier to write today than it has ever been in the past. And yet, the education system, at least in America, has failed to teach several generations to read and certainly not taught them the joy of reading good literature. How long has it been since your child brought home a reading assignment based on the classics? When has a teacher read poetry to your child? Or had your child memorize a poem and recite it in class? In many cases the teacher doesn’t even read well, or if she/he does it is not done in a grammatically correct fashion. So, don’t feel badly if you have worked hard to produce a quality piece of fiction and the readership is low. Just as we have low-information voters we now, more than ever before, have dumbed-down readers. There is nothing you can do to change that. Do not try to “write-down” to your audience, even if you could. Only you will appreciate the quality of your writing. Don’t compromise that. If you prostitute your writing profession and can still sleep at night, you are not a real author.
