Back at It!

My computer crashed about a week and a half ago. At first, I was lost without it. How can one be a writer without a computer? I solved that by borrowing my wife’s small laptop (I have a big old clunky laptop but it is tied up) and was able to scribble a few things. The interesting part was: after a few days I didn’t miss the big computer at all. In fact, I discovered some of the things I did before, like you, I spend most of my day at a keyboard. Things like relaxing and reading a good book. The “art” of reading has been lost on most young adults, and mores the pity. Of course, if they graduate high school with a fifth grade reading level, I suppose it is a chore for them. Having restored my computer now, I am going thru the process of trying to rescue some lost programs. I always keep my writing stuff on jump drives and save them frequently and on different drives so those are secure. But my web-building programs were lost, or Adobe would not renew them because they were not “current.” That is why I hate Adobe and encourage people to use open source (FREE) programs such as Audacity which is just as good as Adobe’s audio program which they stole from CoolEdit. Also, there is a word processor (FREE) which is just as good as MS Office Word. If you Internet search for “open source” programs you will find many that are as good or better than the commercial and expensive ones. For example, GIMP is an open source image editing program which will accomplish almost as much as Adobe’s PhotoShop.
So I am back in business working on a new novel. I thought I would escape that because the world was supposed to end last Friday. Darn it! I was a little disappointed. Because, when it does end – I want to see it!  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all. It’s going to be a high-tax New Year, but we get the kind of government we vote for, don’t we?
