I just went to the dentist. It was not an implant, not a crown, not a cosmetic symptom, it was just a simple chip off a tooth that needed smoothing. I was in the office for exactly twenty minutes. My bill was $243.00. That works out to be $12.53 per minute from the time I walked into his office until I walked out.
Now, I admit that dentists provide a valuable service. I know that they have years of study to do what they do. The point that I wish to make here applies not only to dentists but also to ANY professional occupation. If you an author who is capable in your work you have put in years of study and training to do a satisfactory job and are qualified to charge appropriately for your service.
I have put in years of study and practice to be able to write novels that people read and enjoy. However, I believe the dentist would balk at paying $4.99 for one of my novels that comprises 280 pages and takes me a year to write and perfect. The dentist pays $5.00 for a cup of coffee, but he will hesitate before spending the same for an author’s work.
So, if you are a writer, PLEASE do not give your work away or price it at some ridiculously low price. You are a professional and your work is just as valuable to those who receive enjoyment from reading, as a visit to the dentist.
