“Friendly” book Reviews

Every author wants “reviews” for their books, and preferable four or five star reviews. Some “helpful” suggestions have been to have your friends and relatives write reviews for your work. That might work, but only with your really close and really true friends. And I will tell you why.

EVERYBODY “thinks” they can write a book. I am not sure why this thought prevails, but you know it is true. Not everyone thinks they can perform heart surgery or drive a race car or be a rodeo rider or be in the circus. But, for some reason I have never been able to understand, everyone thinks that they “if they REALLY wanted to” or “had the time to” could write a fine best-seller novel.

What I am saying is this: Your “acquaintances” won’t even consider that YOU could write a good fiction novel. Why, he is not a writer, he is a weatherman or a fireman or a farmer or whatever it was that you did while you were learning your writing craft. They cannot allow themselves to believe that the guy next door, the fellow who brings his kids to the soccer game, or the woman who drives the car pool COULD BE A REAL AUTHOR.

They can’t allow themselves to believe this because if they do – they will have to admit that they really can’t write that terrific book that they thought they could write. Their ego gets in the way. So, unless you have a true friend, don’t expect to get reviews from those who just call themselves your friends. You will get much better and more honest reviews from strangers than you will from those people who know you as “something else” besides being a writer.
