Worth Checking Out

When I read a new book that I find is extraordinary I have to pass the info on to everyone. This book had been on my Amazon “recommended” list for a long time but it was only $2.99 and I have generally found that authors who have so little (experience, confidence, exposure, criticism) that they price their work cheaply – are not worth my time in reading. I do believe, especially if you are a writer, that you should never waste time reading someone who is less talented than you are. Read only those whom you would like to emulate in your own work.

This book is an exception. It is “Daniel” by Keith Yocum and as far as I can tell it is the only book Mr. Yocum has published. I am almost an “expert” on the Vietnam War because I have not only read so many books on the subject, but I have many close friends who served in that conflict. I have found that many books written by participants in that war may have been terrific service men and women and I salute them and thank them for their service to our country – but few are good writers – so their memoirs are stilted or rambling and while they may be factual, they are just not good reading. Mr. Yocum apparently was not in Vietnam but his book “Daniel” has captured the conversation patterns, the attitudes, the jealousies, the abuse of authority – in fact, the whole picture of Vietnam late in the war. And the plot is unique. Yokum has included a bit of fantasy that is mysterious and he has a writing style that doesn’t give you the answer to the riddle until the very last pages. I hate to recommend books, movies, restaurants, airlines, anything really because every individual has unique tastes in all things. And if you read this book and hate it you will think I am an idiot. Well…I am an idiot or I wouldn’t have plodded along the rejection trail that all writers follow. But in my opinion “Daniel” is one of those rare “can’t put it down until finished books” and for $2.99 what have you got to lose? It’s on Amazon Kindle and also in paperback form I believe. Check it out. And let me know what you think of it.
